The snake plant or more commonly known in parts of the Caribbean as the Mother in Law’s Tongue. Is a bold and striking plant, perfect for creating a bright and cheerful mood in any environment.

Dracaena trifasciata is a species of flowering plant in the family Asparagaceae, native to tropical West Africa from Nigeria east to the Congo. It is most commonly known as the snake plant, Saint George’s sword, mother-in-law’s tongue, and viper’s bowstring hemp, among other names.

Its a dream for a beginner gardener, because there is virtually very little maintenance required, it won’t fall over and die if you happen to miss watering it or feeding it.

Plants with large leaf surface area are generally better at absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. So the Snake Plant is an obvious choice because of its large leaves, not only are the leaves large but they also increase in quantity over a short period of time.

Snake plants can also remove air pollutants from a room, a study carried out at Naresuan University, Thailand with 60-80 cm tall snake plants (Sansevieria trifasciata) showed that CO2 level in offices was reduced with 4-5 snake plants. see study here!

It is great for removing harmful toxins from your home. For example, it absorbs benzene. check out this study by NASA. If you look at NASA’s study, it showed that the snake plant got rid of 52.6 percent of a substance called benzene in a sealed chamber. The initial p/m was 0.156, which reduced to 0.074 p/m in final reading after 24 hours.

The NASA study also showed that the snake plant lowered the formaldehyde levels in a room! In the NASA experiment, a single plant removed 31,294 micrograms in a 24 hour period.

Growing house plants such as the snake plant can also help to remove Trichloroethylene and Toluene. This is a compound that can be found in common everyday stuff, such as printing ink, paint removers, and adhesives. Exposure to this compound can cancer, irritation in the upper respiratory tract, nausea, and headache. The study by NASA also showed that the Snake Plant removed 13.4 percent of TCE over 24 hours.
